Meet Bart Valley, Chartered Financial Analyst®

Tell us a little bit about your career and what brought you to Morris Financial Concepts.

“I began my career in the financial services field in 1994 after earning an undergraduate degree in Economics from Cornell University. I then spent the next 16 years gaining experience and expertise in investment research, management, and counsel. While I enjoyed the financial side of the business, I was equally intrigued by the people aspect—by the counseling inherent in being a trusted advisor. So, I returned to graduate school to earn my M.Ed. and Ed. S. degrees in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (graduating in 2013) and subsequently worked as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) for several years.

In 2019, I decided I decided to look for an opportunity through which I could integrate both my investment and counseling knowledge and experience to provide unique value to a firm and its clients. Having known Kyra and Morris Financial Concepts for many years, I knew we would be a great fit. I am a helper at heart, and that is key in what we do. With 17+ years of investment consulting experience and 7+ years of counseling experience, I stand well positioned to provide expert advice rooted in listening, hearing, and, most importantly, understanding each client’s unique needs.

What is the most rewarding part of your position?

“As an Investment Portfolio Manager, I enjoy being able to help. I am passionate about applying my human capital in service to our firm and our clients around the world. Though investment knowledge is important, it is only one piece in helping clients move toward fulfillment. Being able to use my skills and experience in that more encompassing journey is very rewarding.”

What is your favorite aspect of working at Morris Financial Concepts?

“The financial planning profession continues a general evolution towards holistic, client-centered advice, and that is where Morris Financial Concepts has always operated. It is at the heart of everything we do. Our team truly understands the value of holistic advice and counsel. We also have an exceptional team, and that makes it a pleasure to come to work each day.”

As a new local, what do you enjoy most about Lowcountry living?

“I am originally from the southwest part of Virginia, and prior to joining Morris Financial Concepts, my only Lowcountry or coastal time had been on summer beach vacations to Edisto and occasional weekend trips to Charleston. My wife, Logan, grew up in Mt. Pleasant, so she and her family have shown me the ropes since we moved down. It is an amazing area in so many ways (the place and the people) and I am happy to be able to experience a new part of the country ‘from the inside’. A few of my favorite new spots to grab a drink or bite to eat include La Pizzeria, Obstinate Daughter, and H&R Sweet Shop.”

What is your favorite place you have traveled to?

“I have been fortunate to be able to see and experience so many places over the years. I do a lot of backpacking, and many years ago had the opportunity to spend 30 days in the mountains of northern British Columbia, Canada. No trails, only what I carried on my back, in remote mountains that likely had seen few visitors other than indigenous peoples. It was challenging, but the natural beauty, peace, and perspective afforded by that trip have been invaluable.”

Do you have any passions or hobbies that you like to work on in your spare time?

“In addition to backpacking, I am an avid cook, experimenting, and learning over the past 40 years or so. I enjoy exploring, whether it’s my backyard or across the globe. Still, I appreciate the simple pleasures life offers up each day. Time with my family is most important to me. My daughter, Selah, who was born in 2018, makes my wife, Logan, and I smile through most of every day. We also have a 10-year-old silver Labrador retriever, Boone, who actually is the best dog and has been a patient and understanding big brother.”

What animal can you most relate to?

“I think maybe a horse. I don’t have as much experience with horses as I would like, but they seem pretty versatile. They are capable and content whether they are helping, working, racing, or just playing around. They are adaptable, loyal, and faithful. And they love the mountains and the coast!”
